Signs It's Time for a New Roof
Occasionally, the need for a new roof is obvious, such as when a large tree falls on your house or a severe storm rips up the shingles. But since homeowners don’t often inspect their own roofs, other indicators can be easier to miss. It’s recommended that you walk around your home’s exterior once a year to check for signs of damage from the ground. You can also schedule a professional roofing inspection every few years.
Shingles are missing, curling, or buckling.
Walk out into your yard to get a better view of your roof. If you have binoculars, use them to scan the roof. Check for any areas that could be missing shingles. You should also look for shingles that show signs of buckling or curling up at the edges. These signs of damage indicate that your roof is too old to fully protect your home.
Granules are in the gutters.
Every house should have its gutters cleaned out regularly. If you do this job yourself, look for significant amounts of loose granules in the gutters. Or, ask the hired gutter professional to let you know if he or she sees them. It’s normal to see some granules here and there, but significant volumes of granules could indicate that your shingles are getting close to the end of their lifespan.
Daylight is visible in the attic.
Most attics are poorly illuminated, which makes them ideal for checking for roof damage. Go up to yours and check for signs of daylight coming through the ceiling. This is a sign that you need a new roof right away. You should also check for damp insulation, which is another red flag.
